The Navegantes international airport in Brazil's Santa Catarina state is to be expanded under the federal government's regional plan.

The goal is to convert it into a multimodal terminal for cargo and passengers to complement port logistics in the area, civil aviation minister Wellington Moreira Franco
said during a meeting with state mayors.

Works include construction of a new 2,100 metre runway and a multimodal terminal.

The government's plan for Santa Catarina state will benefit twelve other airports with a total investment of US$162 million.

The government's overall regional plan covers 270 airports and seeks to have 96 per cent of the population within 100 kilometres of an airport.
