Monitoring the status of critical safety assets such as crash cushions, guard rails and cable barriers has long been based on informal human observation. Pi-Lit’s small, long-life (4-5 year) battery-powered sensors automatically detect major and minor impact events and immediately notify the appropriate personnel.

According to the company, cost of deployment and monthly connection costs are minimised through Pi-Lit’s “many-to-one” mesh networks that allow many sensors to connect to the Cloud services via a single cellular modem. As autonomous vehicles become more ubiquitous, GPS tagging of work zone assets with an accuracy to within 10 centimetres allows agencies to map work zones and deliver the dynamic layout to vehicles kilometres upstream in real time.

The same technology provides for Cloud-connected Doppler Radar sensors, sequential smart marching lamps for traffic control and impact/fail-over detection of all delineators and lamps (cones, barrels, vertical panels, etc.).
